Best vehicles 2018 With AWD to Buy This Winter
Conquer Bad Weather With These All-Wheel Drive Models
All-wheel drive isn’t absolutely necessary for safe winter
driving, but it’s hard to fault those who feel more comfortable with it.
Putting power to all four wheels increases traction (and confidence) in snow,
rain, and other slippery conditions.
If you’re in the market for a new car and you’re narrowing
your search to vehicles with all-wheel drive, the following slides will
highlight some of your best options. These vehicles come from a variety of
classes, offer all-wheel drive standard or as an option, and are among the best
in their respective categories.
2018 Honda CR-V
Price With AWD: $25,550 | U.S. News Score: 8.8/10
If you’re looking for an affordable way to get one of the
best all-wheel-drive vehicles on the market, look no further than the Honda
CR-V
, which currently tops our compact
SUV rankings
. To be fair, a well-equipped CR-V costs several thousand
dollars more than the price cited above, but it’s still a great value.
The base model comes with a rearview camera and a 2.4-liter
engine, but you can step up just one trim level for a 1.5-liter turbocharged
engine and more features. All-wheel drive is a $1,400 option at any trim level.
2018 Audi Q5
Price With AWD: $41,500 | U.S. News Score: 9.4/10
The fully redesigned Audi Q5 is among the best luxury compact SUVs you can buy, and it comes standard with
all-wheel drive. The Q5 is one of the more expensive models in the class, yet
it presents a pretty good value.
Other amenities include a turbocharged 2.0-liter
four-cylinder engine or a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, a lot of advanced
safety features, and an infotainment system that includes Apple
CarPlay
and Android
Auto
smartphone integration. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel
are available for even more comfort through the colder months.
2018 Volkswagen Atlas
Price With AWD: $33,700 | U.S. News Score: 8.7/10
The all-new Volkswagen Atlas is the brand’s first three-row midsize
SUV
, and despite tough competition in the class, it has already earned a
spot at the top of our rankings.
The Atlas is a thoroughly practical vehicle for winter and
all year round, providing enough room for adults in all three rows. To get
all-wheel drive in an Atlas, you have to opt for the available 3.6-liter V6
engine, but it’s worth the upgrade. The Atlas V6 starts at $31,900 and it will
cost you an additional $1,800 to add all-wheel drive. This crossover gets great
crash test scores and is offered with a long list of safety features.
2018 Subaru Outback
Price With AWD: $25,895 | U.S. News Score: 8.5/10
Since every Subaru
Outback
comes standard with all-wheel drive, this wagon is an easy choice
if you’re looking for a new winter vehicle. Subaru offers plenty of options, of
course, but even the base model will have you covered at a relatively
affordable price.
The Outback also includes an efficient four-cylinder engine,
Apple CarPlay and Android
Auto
smartphone integration, and more cargo space than most competitors. It
currently holds the third spot in our wagon
rankings
, close on the heels of luxury competitors that cost much more.
2018 BMW X1
Price With AWD: $35,900 | U.S. News Score: 8.5/10
The BMW X1 is a relatively affordable way to enjoy an upscale
winter commute. This luxury subcompact SUV comes in only one trim level, and
all-wheel drive is optional. You’ll get a powerful turbocharged four-cylinder
engine, two rows of comfortable seating, and class-leading cargo capacity. A
rearview camera and power liftgate come standard. The X1 has responsive
steering and predictable handling, which will help you navigate unpleasant road
conditions.
2018 GMC Terrain
Price With AWD: $29,600 | U.S. News Score: 8.5/10
A lot of choices are available with the redesigned GMC
Terrain
. This compact
SUV
is offered with three powertrains, so you can decide between two
turbocharged four-cylinder engines and a turbodiesel engine. All three are
available with the all-wheel drive system, although you’ll need to step up at
least one trim level from the base model to get this option. All Terrain models
include an infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, Apple
CarPlay
and Android
Auto
, and a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot.
2018 Mazda CX-3
Price With AWD: $21,360 | U.S. News Score: 8.2/10
Despite its lower-than-average starting price, the Mazda
CX-3
is one of the top models in our subcompact SUV rankings. Even better, you can get all-wheel
drive in every trim level for an extra $1,250.
Every CX-3 comes powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine
that provides great acceleration and gas mileage (27/32 mpg city/highway).
Standard features include a rearview camera, low-speed automatic emergency
braking, and an infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen. Heated seats
are available, and a heated steering wheel is a new option for this year.
2018 Subaru Impreza
Price With AWD: $18,495 | U.S. News Score: 8.1/10
Subaru earns another spot in this slideshow with the Impreza,
an efficient and affordable compact
car
that provides all-wheel drive as standard equipment. The Impreza is the
only model on this list that isn’t an SUV; it’s available as a sedan or a
hatchback.
The Subaru Impreza isn’t exactly exciting, but its
four-cylinder engine balances out mediocre acceleration with good fuel economy.
Other standard equipment includes an infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touch
screen, Android Auto and Apple
CarPlay
smartphone integration, and a rearview camera.
